The range of electric cars on the market has never been greater, and this will only continue to grow.

EVs are no longer restricted to Teslas and small battery-powered models anymore. There are a plethora of perfect electric family cars available, including SUVs, estate cars, and cool hatchbacks.

So if you’re looking for a new family car, and you’re ready to go electric, then here are some models you should consider.

Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen is rapidly expanding its line-up of ID electric models, and though the ID.3 hatchback is a very appealing EV, our vote goes to the larger ID.4 SUV for families. It’s essentially a sibling model to the equivalent Audi and Skoda electric family cars, but really delivers with its huge interior and generous equipment levels.

A wide choice of battery options are available, with the top ‘Pro Performance’ model serving up 322 miles of range. With sub-£35,000 pricing, it’s also eligible for the government’s electric car grant, and on the more affordable end of the EV scale for families.

Citroen e-C4

Citroen has quickly gone from having no electrified options on the market to a wide range of options, including hybrids and EVs. Its latest offering is the e-C4 – a funky electric hatchback that offers generous standard equipment levels and a WLTP electric range of up to 217 miles.

Unlike rivals, the e-C4 also puts a special emphasis on comfort, with this model having one of the best rides of any new car on sale today.

MG ZS

Electric family cars, especially SUVs, while being extremely cheap to run, can be quite expensive to buy upfront. There is one notable exception, though – the MG ZS EV. The most affordable electric SUV available in the UK.

The MG ZS is cheaper than rivals such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia e-Niro, and it even undercuts smaller EVs, including the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf. With a range of 163 miles, which is more than sufficient for school runs and supermarket sweeps. It’s spacious, well-equipped, and has lots of innovative safety tech, making it a very attractive option for suburban families.

MG5

While the MG ZS EV offers superb value for families looking for an SUV, its partner in affordable electric is the superb MG5 estate. The latest 2021 model has been updated with a bigger battery, meaning it now boasts a 250-mile range, as well as 100kW charging capability, which means it can charge 0-80% in 40 minutes.

It offers family-friendly space, great tech, and a gob-smacking 7-year warranty, all of which make it a remarkably pragmatic choice. A great electric family car, that’s designed to be affordable, yet really go the distance.

Peugeot e2008

The Peugeot 2008 became a well-established family car favourite with a little French flair and edge to the design. The Peugeot e-2008 all-electric small SUV retains the cool looks, while offering electric practicality and modern comfort throughout.

The model also offers 100kWh charging as standard, allowing for quick charge-ups if you’re doing family trips around the country. It’s sharp, good-looking, and surprisingly quick.

Vauxhall e-Mokka

The new all-electric Vauxhall Mokka-e 2021 boasts 134bhp and a 201-mile range, at a very affordable price. A smartly conceived small SUV with a respectable range and a young lively feel to the design and interior.

The Mokka is also one of the most conventional-feeling EVs, with a comfortable ride, smooth acceleration, and peppy enough 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds. With good in-car tech, a nice cabin finish, and plenty of room in the back for kids.

BMW i3

The BMW i3 is a small electric family car with a funky interior, great tech, and a good electric range, ideal for town and city driving. Its sharp looks and high quality make it slightly more expensive than some of its rivals, but this has helped it to become a very popular icon of electric driving.

The i3’s cabin is plush and there’s plenty of space for you to get comfortable, even if you’re more than six-foot tall, and having kids in the back is no issue at all. It offers punchy acceleration, and is very easy to drive, with a tight turning circle that’s handy for parking and getting about, and large windows that make it easy to see out of and enjoy the scenery.

BMW iX

If you like BMW’s electric innovation, but want a larger family car, and a more edgy design, then the new iX is definitely worth considering.

With a whopping 380-mile range, a bespoke EV platform, cutting-edge tech suite, and BMW’s new-generation electric motors, the iX truly delivers. Cabin quality is superb, and thanks to large dimensions there’s a generous amount of rear legroom, and the car’s boxy shape means that headroom is in abundance, even for those over 6ft tall. However, with the size and spec of this model, it does represent the most expensive option on the list.

Skoda Enyaq iV

Skoda’s cars are renowned for their practicality and affordability, and those two traits have still been successfully carried over to the brand’s first standalone EV – the Enyaq iV. Offering vast amounts of interior space and a starting price of just over £32k (after the grant), it’s really not much more expensive than a petrol or diesel SUV of the same size.

A series of trims and battery configurations are available, too, with Skoda even readying a sporty vRS model for the future. With a range of 333 miles, it’s an ideal option for longer trips too.

Kia e-Niro

The Kia e-Niro proved to be a game-changing EV, not just for Kia but also the segment as a whole. Demonstrating that long range wasn’t limited to premium and expensive electric cars; the e-Niro can manage 282 miles on a single charge when equipped with the larger 64kWh battery.

Though not as roomy as other cars on this list, this Kia still has a decent-sized interior that has plenty of space for a young family, as well as generous equipment levels and sprightly performance.
